Dries Van Noten – my view

This is what the show looked like from my vantage point. Beautiful from any angle……

Dries Van Noten – showroom detail
Dries Van Noten’s show was quietly beautiful. I had claimed the dresses to be the strongest part of his collection. This one look was one of my favorites…. and I stand to be corrected. It’s not a dress at all…. it’s the simplest short sleeved tee shirt top in silk with a long a fishtail train skirt in one his original mix of prints for f.w 2011.

Dries Van Noten – Collage Master

Dries Van Noten returned to what he does best… mixing colors and prints like only he can. He went further and played also with different fabrics and textures sometimes all in the same article of clothing. It worked brilliantly especially in the beautiful dresses he sent out, most notably his long dresses. Dedicating the collection to the liberal woman. One who dares and has an individual sense of self. No matter what the reference, Dries Van Noten, is a designer who remains unique and often tells his seasonal stories only as he can. A stunning collection.

Dries Van Noten took to playing with light and color with his s.s 2011 collection. His effort to convey light came from the studies of artist Jef Verheyen, considered one of the most significant Belgian artists of the twentieth century.

He replicated colors and faded them one into another. He utilized white and silver to play off the colors and then planted floral prints within his lineup. He then played the masculine / feminine game with oversized boyfriend jackets and white shirts with soft silk printed dresses and pants and skirts.

Dries has given us another beautiful and commercially viable collection. There was an obvious ease to his clothes and his colors were inviting. Another winner for Dries!

Dries Van Noten – Mr. Clean & Beautiful
Just a few runway shots to whet your appetite. Dries Van Noten’s Spring collection embraced clean white, metallics, prints and shots of color… some fading from one color to another. A beautiful collection. More to come later…..

Dries Van Noten – revisited
Many of you asked for more photos of the Dries Van Noten f.w 2010 show. My trusty little Casio Exilim couldn’t do it’s usual job from my vantage point at the show and the lighting was not very advantageous for quality photos. Instead, here is the link to the Dries Van Noten website and to the video of the runway show that took place on Wednesday, 5 March 2010 @ 3:00pm… in a grand hall of the Hotel de Ville. It’s like you’re there yourselves….

One quick photo I will include that I just found in my camera…. I was only able to get the back of the dress as it strode by. The print look familiar? I believe it is the same fabric and print of the beautiful gown that Maggie Gyllenhaal wore to the Academy Awards this past Sunday.

Dries Van Noten – perfect dream
Now this is the way to open a season in Paris! I am more of a fan than ever of Dries Van Noten and his sensitive vision. A true mixmaster. The blending and layering was perfection and done with ease. He showed his collection in a very grand hall in the Hotel de Ville. The opulent and ornate space with its painted ceilings, gold trims and resplendent chandeliers was such a purposeful contrast to the very straight forward and graceful collection delivered by Mr. Van Noten.
His play of proportion and silhouette was interpreted from the 50’s and 60’s. Of note was the full skirt and how he modernized this 50’s silhouette as well as a few other very recognizable shapes from these decades. The contrast of prim and casual was his goal and it was achieved effortlessly. He shuffled it all together with elements of military, fur, sweat-shirting, prints and cotton utility basics. His contradictions were done so expertly that they appear to be the right look. An exciting start to another season in Paris… and now the Paris calendar has a new leader!

PARIS – Dries Van Noten – global chic

Dries Van Noten returned to foreign soil for inspiration for S/S 2010. One stop in India, another in Japan, followed by a final landing in Paris to wrap it all together and give his return to ethnic influences a touch of Parisian chic. The rich jeweled colors in shantung silks, ikat prints, miao prints, embroidered silks were embellished lightly with stones and beads. Mr. Van Noten revisited his well known ethnic aesthetic but with a lean towards 1930’s Paris.

Sensually wrapped sari dresses and skirts with tails made well known their origins, but looked modern and right if worn in any city around the world. Dries Van Noten’s always capably mixes the richest of colors and prints with his very adept hand.

He thoughtfully paired some of his boldest pieces with a simple khaki pant to give his collection every day relevance. The clothes are very present but never over the top. Always strong but never too much. True global chic……………
